SF Limo Driver Hustling Sreet Fares Caught On Video!

In this video, a limousine driver is seen soliciting fares off of the street in San Francisco.

This is illegal in California.  The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency website regarding "other motor vehicles for hire" says this...

"Beware of Illegal limousines

Limousine companies make reservations with their customers.  They are not allowed to pick people up on the street.  And some limousines are not even licensed by the City or the State of California; they just pick people up wherever they can.
Limousine rides are legally required to be prearranged with the customer, usually by phone or in writing.

Look for a charter-party carrier (TCP) permit number on the front and rear bumpers of the vehicle.

Ask for driver’s business card and receipt before departing.

Limousine drivers are forbidden from soliciting customers on the street; they may only pick up customers with reservations".  (SFMTA website)

This video was taken on a cell phone by Peter Witt, a SF taxi driver for 24 years.  It clearly shows the driver hustling for $5 per person.

According to Witt, the video was shot on July 6th, at Fisherman Wharf's North Point and Hyde St. intersection.  The line of people are the overflow from the cable car turnaround at Beach and Hyde St.

The limo's TCP and vehicle license plate numbers are on the video.

  1. Well great for Peter but I was doing that more than twenty years ago. Then Sen. Kopp had a hearing on the Limo problem and as one might expect PUC did nothing at all then or since.

  2. Just like the poor Taxi Drivers the guy is trying to make a buck. Riding in a Limo is much classier than riding in a cab or cable car!

  3. Here's something ironic:

I was walking to my car after a game at AT&T Park and a limo pulled over with a passenger rolling down the window. She (the passenger) said: "Do you know where Nob Hill is?" I replied back that she should fire the limo driver.

At least cab drivers in this city is required to take a test of where everything is in this city.

  4. So much for screening comments...Not like cabbie, tho,....who pay gates and gas and MTA fees. Maybe MTA doesn't mind there fares being rustled just like the CPUC/SFPD/D.A......and the MTA don't mind Limos soliciting "taxi fares" in front of Hotels...Via the doormen. And now the perarranged dispatched (MKT) orders via- Uber. Looks like cabbies are In for a little harder times looking for their bucks then limo drivers, buck-a-rue.

  5. Johnny walker sez,

Well folks, thats the way it's going to be, the SFMTA, cab management have ZERO INCENTIVE to help

Out the drivers, they are getting what the want, right? The serf drivers just need to show up for their shifts

And shut their pinholes's and work to subsidize everyone else's absolutely fabulous lifestyles, in if there

Good little boys and girls, some scraps might be thrown their way, good bye!

  6. Basically the way I see it is that cab drivers did this to themselves in San Francisco.

I love the comment that taxi drivers have to take test to know where things are in the city, but yet many do not.

Most Cab drivers do not want to take credit cards because they cry about 3.5 percent charges.

Usually what I have heard that cab drivers are rude and mean to passengers especially women and gays!

As far as I can see taxi drivers do not care about one another yet their own self.

Some taxi drivers brag about not paying taxes for many years!

Most taxi drivers do not want to take people to the avenues even after getting hybrids! The way I see it is that it the job of the taxi driver to transport people in the city and is not a privilege to get in a taxi!

Your so called leaders are more concerned about issues pertaining to medallion owners than the slaves who drive as gates and gas drivers!

I will enjoy watching the Taxi drivers suffer as they did to may in San Francisco when all they wanted was a ride!

John lets see if you allow this posting to remain as it is what the public has been saying about the taxi industry, to correct the problems taxi drivers need to hear it!

  7. One last thing the SFMTA would be smart to let taxi drivers disappear off the streets of San Francisco because they are such a pain in the ass.

The city hall would be better off because they would have polite drivers which would represent the city well in the tourists eyes that they would come back and visit San Francisco again!

  9. The taxi industry is headed for rough waters and it's drivers, or rather the one that are left will bear the full brunt of declining revenues until the medallion owners are forced to take a reduction in their monthly stipend, oh well

  10. Golly gee,

It makes one wonder how hybels and his ilk, are going to break it to the medallion owners that well, your

Monthly stipend will be cut in half because uber x and apps like them, reduced taxi fares to only drunks,

Tourists and para transit all because taxi companies DELIBERATELY over many decades provided poor

Taxi dispatch to the drivers and passengers, thus providing a vacuum from which UBER and apps like them

    Came barreling through.

You know, cabs will still exist albeit a mutilated form kind of in the same condition as newsprint ad

Revenues were ravaged by the likes of craigslist and eBay, oh wait a minute are the not going broke?

  25. Most limos already have twwo exit doors and tempered safety glass that will break easily with a break out tool ! The problem will be with the intoxicated passengers opening them up and falling out. Most modern cars lock the doors as soon as the car is in gear, cchild door locks are also a problem! I propose a law to put smoke detectors and glass break out tools in every coMmercial passenger vehicle. Smoke detectors would provide an early warning system and would be inexpensive. Any upstanding operator would already have a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in their vehicles.

Some died in Turkey in the past days. More died in my part of Europe because of some really bad floods in the past
week. On monday I have witnessed a horrible car accident where some old woman died in front of me.
